Responding to sexual behavior in therapy

Dear colleagues, we are excited to invite you to our upcoming Deliberate Practice workshop: Responding to sexual behavior in therapy

Sexual behavior in therapy can make even the most seasoned therapist fall short. Be it implicit or explicit, verbal or non-verbal, intended or non-intended and conscious or unconscious: It has to be addressed in a way that enables the therapeutic alliance to do work.

These situations are very evocative, leading to an array of distracting reactions within the therapist. As the sexual behavior often is subtle, implicit and non-verbal, addressing it may feel extra tricky. Approaching sexual behavior is thus known to be challenging and may frequently be avoided by the therapist – to the disadvantage of the client.

Deliberate practice: Skill-building converting knowledge to skills:

This workshop will use the gold standard in mastery-based learning: Deliberate Practice. Our aim is first and foremost to help you build skills that you can use to disentangle from the sexualized alliance ruptures and stay helpful. This is not a theoretical workshop. Through skill-building exercises your certified deliberate practice supervisors will help you engage in helpful active learning. Participants are free to apply their own therapy models as we practice.

Learning objectives:

· To be able to approach rather than avoid sexual behavior in therapy and feel safer in addressing it tentatively and exploratively.

· To enhance your awareness of your reactions, and to regulate yourself so you don´t get distracted and the work derailed.

· To initiate a collaboration on handling the sexualized content with your patient.

Vidar M. Husby and Elisabet Rosén are both licensed psychologists, specialists in clinical psychology and Certified Deliberate Practice Supervisors.

We want to hear from you!

Participants are welcome to send us examples of sexual clinical challenges that you have experienced at work in advance. This way, we can tailor content as good as we can. The collected challenges will be mentioned with total confidentiality.
